Meat pie, sausage roll, come on lads, give us a goal! Soccer, football, whatever you call the beautiful game, the one thing Americans and Brits agree on is that Match Day demands proper game day snacks. Get your mates over, turn up the telly and serve authentic British “footie scran”.
There’s nothing quite like the roar of the crowd, the smell of the grass, and the sheer tension of a proper English football match. But if you’re a Brit Stateside, recreating that glorious stadium atmosphere at home for the big game, it requires more than just a big screen. It demands the perfect game day snacks.
When it comes to football food, we’ve got all grounds covered at Jolly Posh.
What Is Football Food?
For many years, English and Scottish football food was a quick halftime snack washed down with a pint. It was convenient with little thought. Today, the world of football food has been revolutionised. Think premium meat pies, proper sausage sarnies and bacon butties, and of course, the king of match day snacks: the iconic sausage roll.
With the Jolly Posh range, you can create those same English or Scottish stadium favourites at home.
7 Easy Game Day Food Ideas
With a summer of sport fast approaching, and the world’s largest soccer tournament being held here in the USA, we need to get our game day snacks in order. We’re not talking nachos and corn dogs, we want hearty, handheld, proper British snacks.
Here’s what to stock your freezer with so you’re ready for the big game:
Sausage Rolls
If there’s one food that screams 'game day,' it’s the humble yet glorious sausage roll. Originally convenient meals for hard-working English communities, these savoury delights are the perfect partner for 90 minutes of nail-biting action. Whether you’re cheering on the Three Lions, a member of the Tartan Army, or just enjoying a Premier League clash, a flaky, golden-brown pastry filled with prime cuts of seasoned meat is essential.
- Traditional Sausage Roll Keep it simple and classic with a traditional sausage roll. Rich, seasoned pork encased in golden, flaky puff pastry. It’s a British staple for a reason.
- Cumberland Sausage Roll Inspired by the distinctive Cumberland sausage, this modern twist on a classic brings a peppery taste to the table.
- Beef Sausage Roll Made with traditional beef flavourings of onion and garlic, this is a hearty alternative to the classic delicate pork.
If you’re putting on a full English or Scottish football food spread, you can’t miss out on these classics.
Chicken Curry Pie
A stadium icon, the great British Chicken Curry Pie is enjoyed in stadiums on both sides of Hadrian’s Wall. A dedication to Britain’s love affair with curry, this rich, comforting and familiar pie is a half time essential. Best served on its own with no frills, the chicken curry pie has cemented itself as a traditional game day snack.
Pork Pies
Humble but essential, the pork pie is the cornerstone of cold, match day food. Easy to eat throughout the game or save for half time, this is a no-fuss snack best served cold with your favourite condiment.
Steak and Ale Pie
The OG of football pies, a classic Steak and Ale Pie is steeped in match day food tradition. Imagine hearty chunks of slow-cooked steak in a rich ale gravy whilst watching your team bring it home. Heaven.
Bacon Butties
Few things say match day quite like a proper bacon butty. Packed with sizzling back bacon on soft buttered bread and finished with a generous squeeze of brown sauce or ketchup, it’s the ultimate grab-and-go comfort food for football fans everywhere.
Sausage Sandwich
Better than a hot dog, a hearty banger in a French Baguette. Whether topped with fried onions, brown sauce, or just served straight-up, it’s the kind of satisfying crowd-pleaser that belongs alongside a pint and pre-game banter.
Cornish Pasties
Golden, flaky, and filled with hearty meat and potatoes, the Cornish pasty has been fuelling hungry football fans for generations. Easy to eat on the go and packed with rich, savoury flavour, it’s the perfect match day snack.
Top Tips to Elevate Your Football Snacks
Getting the game day food right is half the battle in recreating a true English football atmosphere. Pair your hot pies and snacks with a decent brew, get your colours on, and crank up the volume.
When to prep and serve
It’s almost like pies were made for match days. Pop yours in the oven about 10 minutes before kick-off and they will be ready just before half time - perfect!
Our sausage rolls take around 30-35 minutes to bake, but we recommend leaving them to rest for around 20 minutes to get the perfect temperature and texture. Pop them in with your pies before kick-off and they’ll be ready right on time for the break.
For cold snacks, we recommend baking your pork pies the night before then leaving in the fridge overnight. Take them out a few hours before kick off and they’ll be perfect for grazing on through the game or save for a half time treat.
