What’s the difference between a British Sausage Roll and an American Sausage Roll?

Ask for a sausage roll in the USA, and there's a chance you might be handed a hotdog wrapped in a slice of bread. And British Sausage Rolls are NOT the same as what Americans call “pigs in blankets” which are beef hotdogs wrapped in puff pastry.

For British people, a sausage roll is something entirely different: seasoned pork sausage meat encased in golden puff pastry.

In the UK, it feels like you're never more than six feet away from a proper sausage roll.

They are a ubiquitous snack, sold everywhere from high street bakeries to petrol stations, served at football matches and Royal Weddings alike. British sausage rolls range from budget-friendly versions like the iconic Greggs sausage roll to gourmet varieties at farmers' markets and upscale restaurants.

Why do British people love Sausage Rolls so much?

This savoury pastry is not simply a cornerstone of British snacking, in recent years it has become woven into the fabric of our national identity.

When Brits move to the USA, they feel confused that Sausage Rolls are not a worldwide snacking staple. (Americans: imagine moving to a country where no one knows what a taco is!)

If you are a Brit living in the USA and missing your sausage rolls, or if you’re an American who is sausage-roll-curious after seeing a viral post, the good news is that we ship our ready-to-bake sausage rolls across the USA. No fuss, just bake from frozen.

Where and when are Mini Sausage Rolls eaten?

Mini sausage rolls are the bitesize version of the full size sausage rolls which makes them perfect to serve at parties. Mini sausage rolls can be enjoyed hot from the oven or cooled to room temperature, making them perfect for packed lunches, picnics, or parties.

  • football watch parties - “meat pie, sausage roll, come on team give us a goal!”

  • an afternoon tea - easy to eat and elegant

  • kids birthday parties - did you know that Bluey loves sausage rolls? (and baked beans!)

  • Christmas parties - of for a Boxing Day “picky tea”

  • Picnics - pack a few of these next time you head out for a hike or to a beach

What makes Jolly Posh British Sausage Rolls so special?

Our Jolly Posh Sausage Rolls are one of our bestsellers for a reason. Brits living in the USA really miss them.

Our sausage rolls are special because unlike other sausage rolls out our sausage rolls arrive to you frozen and ready-to-bake (rather than cooked and then frozen). This means that the puff pastry really puffs up properly in your oven, resulting in the golden, flaky, succulent taste you’re missing.

We believe that there is nothing better than a freshly baked sausage roll, other than getting to eat it back home!

What do British sausage rolls taste like?

Imagine flaky, buttery layers wrapping around juicy, succulent minced pork blended with soft breadcrumbs and traditional seasonings.

Sausage Rolls are a delicious cross between a meat pie and a hand-held pastry.

What sauces should I serve with my British Mini Sausage Rolls?

The following condiments pair wonderfully with a traditional British sausage roll:

HP Sauce - The quintessentially British choice with its tangy, slightly spicy flavour

Coleman’s English Mustard - A sharp, punchy kick that cuts through the richness of the pastry

Mrs Darlington’s Piccalilli - A sweet and tangy mustard pickle that adds brightness

Mrs Darlington’s Ale Chutney - Sweet and savoury depth that pairs perfectly with pork

It is worth noting that we have at least one customer who likes to dip their sausage rolls into Marmalade! Hot sauce, sports pickles, sriracha… anything goes.

How To Cook Mini Sausage Rolls

Ingredients:

  • Two packets of Jolly Posh Sausage Rolls - frozen
  • One egg, beaten

OR

  • 6 Jolly Posh pork sausages of your choice - defrosted
  • 2 sheets of store bought frozen Puff Pastry
  • One egg, beaten

Quick Method: using Jolly Posh Sausage Rolls:

1. Slice the Sausage Rolls

Preheat the oven to 375°F

Remove the frozen sausage rolls from the freezer, let the packet rest for 30 minutes before unwrapping and placing on chopping board. Slice each sausage roll into four bitesize pieces (making 24 in total)

2. Egg Wash

Place the mini sausage rolls onto lined baking tray leaving plenty of space between each roll. Egg wash generously.

Tip: you could also add a few poppy, sesame seeds or black pepper to the tops of your sausage rolls here, for colour and extra crunch.

3. Bake

Place in oven for 30-35 minutes or until the sausage is thoroughly cooked to 165F. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving!

Longer Method: using Jolly Posh Sausages

1. Defrost the Ingredients

Defrost the sausages and sheets of puff pastry overnight in the fridge.

2. Prepare the Sausage Meat

Using a sharp knife, carefully remove the casing from each sausage, leaving the meat in the same sausage shape. Do not mix the meat!.

3. Prepare the Pastry

Unroll the puff pastry sheets onto two chopping boards. Turn the sheets portrait, and slice carefully in half down the centre, creating two long rectangles.

4. Add Sausage Meat

Place one and a half case-free sausages in a line down the center of each puff pastry rectangle. Roll the pastry over the sausage meat, sealing it using a little egg.

5. Slice and Egg Wash

Slice each of the four resulting rolls into six bitsize sausage rolls.

6. Bake

Place on a lined baking sheet and place in over for 25 minutes or until the sausage is thoroughly cooked to 165°F.

7. Enjoy!

Let rest before serving with HP Sauce or chutneys.
