I was quite hesitant in buying a pork pie as many of those made in UK these days are only fit for the garbage pail. I was also afraid the meat would be more like sausage meat.
I baked the pie per the helpful instruction leaflet and used about half of the gelatin. When all was ready I cut a small tasting wedge not expecting to eat much more.
Wow! What an experience. A perfect pie pastry with good crunch, a jolly good meat texture, nicely spiced which along with the moisture of the meat itself kind of jingles the taste buds. The gelatin package made more than the pie could absorb but instead of chucking it away per the instructions, I put it in the fridge to set and ate it with the pie. As a kid, I could never get enough gelatin in a pie and this excess really enhances the pie experience, in my opinion.
Obviously one can’t expect to get original Melton Mowbray pork, fed on local milk byproducts of the local farming area, but I’ve yet to find any better pies than the Jolly Posh Melton Mowbray pork pie. Unlike some pies on the market, the lid is firmly sealed and doesn’t lift during baking.
Well made; well done!
I’ll be buying more but will be very fussy who I share the delicacy with!
