When large numbers of British miners emigrated to the USA in the 1800s they brought their skills and a craving for their favourite lunch. Missing a taste of home these miners shared their recipes and local Americanized versions are available in certain regions.

An empanada and a pasty might look similar, but there are a few important differences. For starters, Cornish Pasties and British-style pasties are larger! They almost constitute a meal in themselves rather than just a snack. The filling in a traditional Cornish Pasty is beef with potatoes, swede (rutabaga), root vegetables and a big kick of pepper. A Cornish Pasty pastry is made with a flaky, savoury shortcrust made using wheat flour, rather than corn or maize flour. Empanadas are often fried whereas a pasty is always baked.
