The Difference Between a British Bacon Butty and an American Bacon Sandwich

The key distinction between a British bacon butty and an American bacon sandwich lies in the type of bacon used.

British bacon butties are made with back bacon, a leaner and meatier cut taken from the loin of the pig. It has a texture and appearance somewhat similar to a thin pork chop. Americans use streaky bacon, cut from the pork belly, and has a higher fat content, which makes it crispier when cooked.

While both versions are equally as tasty, the back bacon in a British butty offers a hearty, smoky flavour and a firmer texture that is unique to this classic dish.

How to Make Irish Mac and Cheese

Ingredients:

  • 2 packs of Back Bacon rashers
  • 6 Bread Rolls or your favourite sandwich buns
  • Salted butter (for spreading)
  • HP brown sauce or ketchup (optional)

Method:

Step One: Cook the bacon on medium heat frying pan

Step Two: Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the slices of bacon and cook until they reach your preferred level of crispiness, flipping them occasionally.

Step Three: Prefer oven-baked bacon? Pop the rashers of bacon onto a lined baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 20–25 minutes, turning halfway through.

Step Four: Prep the rolls. While the bacon cooks, generously butter the base of each crusty bread roll (or toasted English muffin if you’re feeling fancy). You can use whatever bread you fancy for this, swap out rolls for slices of bread, a bacon sandwich tastes amazing with white bread or brown bread too!

Step Five: Assemble your butty. Pile the cooked bacon onto the buttered rolls. Add a dollop of HP sauce or ketchup—whichever you prefer—to elevate the flavours.

Step Six: Serve and enjoy! Your bacon butty is ready! Serve immediately for maximum deliciousness
